Cougars cruise in win over McNair

STOCKTON – The Weston Ranch varsity soccer team had little trouble knocking off McNair High, destroying the Eagles 8-0 in non-league action Tuesday at McNair.

Freshman Alexia Sanchez made major contributions in the Cougars’ first win of the season, turning in a game-high four goals and dishing out three assists. Marissa Bradshaw also contributed to the offensive breakout, scoirng a pair of goals and helping with two assists.

“We played well as a team today,” Weston Ranch head coach Carlos Gaspar said. “It was encouraging to see everything start off on the right track.”

The Cougars built a confortable 4-0 halftime lead and matched their first-half total in the second half. Wafa Hafed and Jasmine Quintero also soed goals for the Cougars. Hafed also made good on an assist.

The Cougars will try and push ahead with the momentum as they open the Buffaloe Cup with a first-round contest against Bret Harte Friday.

Turlock 2, Sierra 1
The Timberwolves were unable to start off the season on the right track, falling to the visiting Turlcok Bulldogs in preseason play Tuesday.

Turlock jumped ahead with a Kaila Avila goal in the 14th minute, but saw it answered when Joana Ortiz found the net three minutes later. Scoirng would remain silent until Turlock netted the game-winner in the 36th minute of the second half.

“I though we played pretty well for our first game,” Sierra head coach Manuel Pires said. “We had some good chances, but we could not get a goal in there.

“They were able to get their goal across with about four minutes left to go in the game.”

Sierra will try and grab its first win of the season when they travel to Stockton to meet up with Lincoln High Thursday.

Tokay 2, East Union 1
LODI – The Lancers did everything right for 78 mintes, but Tokay High was able to steal a victory in the final seconds of Tuesday’s preseason action.

The physical Tigers took advantage of every offensive opportunity and did not allow the weather conditions to play a role in their outcome. Selena daSilva scored the lone goal for the Lancers, piercing home a 25-foot direct for an East Union score.

The Lancers will be back on the pitch today, as they play host to the Ripon Indians at 4:30 p.m.

BASEBALL
Ripon 12, Lathrop 2
RIPON – The Indinas wasted little time asserting themsleves as the dominant squad, taking care of the Spartans in five innings.

Rene Zuniga, Mikey Pereznegron and Keith Howrd all went 1-for-3 in the contest, with Zuniga and Pereznegron both collecting RBI. Oscar Caliz went 1-for-2 for the Spartans, collecting the final of their four hits.
