The Ripon High soccer team wasted little time building a 1-0 lead when Katherine Ratto took a beautiful feed from Kallie Jacobs, giving the Indians the first of two goals in a 2-1 win over host Manteca High Tuesday.

The Indians (2-0) backed up Ratto’s offensive production with stellar defensive play, holding the Buffaloes (1-2) scoreless for the first 40 minutes of action. Manteca tightened up its defense after the goal, keeping the Indians off of the scoreboard until the game’s 75th minute.

“We played very poorly for the first 20 minutes of the game when that goal was scroed,” Manteca head coach Justin Coenenberg said. “And after that I think we were pretty much able to control the rest of the game. We were able to outshoot them on shots on goal.

“I’m not happy not getting a win, but I’m pretty happy with the way we played for about two-thirds of the game.”

The Buffaloes tallied their first goal when Rileigh Mankin made good on a shot in the 75th minute to cut a two goal Ripon lead to one, but Manteca could muster nothing else.

Ripon tacked on its final goal when Renae McFadden squared-up a perfect pass from Lauren Goeppert and put it in the back of the net at the 71st minute. McFadden’s goal proved more valuable than it seemed when Mankin’s shot found the net.

“Manteca had a lot of game and they actually outshot us,” Ripon assistant coach Bryce Perkins said. “It’s the second win in a row where we have been outshot but able to still pull it out.

“That is a good thing to see early, when you get outshot and can still win.”

Both squads will be back on the field today as the Indians make their way back to Manteca to take on the East Union Lancers, while Manteca will make the trip to Modesto to meet up with Johansen High.
