Sophomore Ilena Rivera is quickly turning into a human highlight reel for the East Union soccer team.

Rivera had five goals and two assists Wednesday in the Lancers’ 8-0 Valley Oak League shellacking of Kimball-Tracy at Dino Cunial Field, but she did so with a heavy heart. She and the rest of the East Union soccer team dedicated the Kimball game to Stan Hogan, a 28-year Manteca Unified employee who passed away during the Lancers’ Monday night victory over Weston Ranch.

“We played for Stan,” Rivera said. “Before the game we talked about it and we said we wanted to play for him to show how much we appreciated him.

“So we went out there and did what we had to do to win the game for him.”

East Union coach Victor Polanco knows how fortunate he is to have a player like Rivera.

“I am lucky to have that kind of player,” Polanco said of Rivera. “I love it.

“It looks like she is enjoying the game. She has fun in the field and she is a team player, too.”

It took less than a minute for Rivera to be involved in a goal. Isabella Rivera – Ilena’s sister – booted a corner kick to Ilena Rivera who headed it to Maddie Yslava. Yslava tapped the ball into the net and the rout was on for the Lancers (4-0 VOL, 7-0).

“My sister and I work well together,” Isabella Rivera said. “I wasn’t supposed to be taking that kick but I did and it was a mis-hit, straight to my sister’s head and then straight to Maddy’s foot.”

Five minutes into the game Bella Cardenas lined up a direct kick near midfield and launched it toward the Jaguars’ goal. A Kimball defender deflected the ball and Brittney Moneyhun pounced on the deflection and kicked it into the net for a 2-0 lead.

Enter Ilena Rivera.

She picked up her first goal midway through the first half on a 25-yard direct kick, past the wall set up by Kimball (0-1-3, 6-3-3) and off the post. Following that goal, Ilena Rivera and the rest of the Lancers kept Jaguars goalie Amanda Leal hopping, forcing Leal to make eight saves before she came out to take on Ilena Rivera and Rivera got past her and scored to make the score 4-0 with 2:11 left in the first half.

Ilena Rivera added three more second-half goals – one assisted by Lancers goalie Anna Wood who boomed a goal kick past midfield to Ilena Rivera for Rivera to blast it in from 35 yards out. Cardenas assisted on another Ilena Rivera goal and with seven minutes left in the game Ilena Rivera assisted on a goal to Clarissa Lecche to round out the scoring.
