Last month, the Manteca Unified School District school board approved the student calendar for 2010-2011.

Trustees made severe changes to the proposed calendar put together by the five-member negotiation team, moving the first official day of instruction to Aug. 23, 2010 – one week later than originally planned – and the last day of school to June 3, 2011.

Gone, too, is the week off initially planned 10 weeks into the start of the school year, with Thanksgiving now a week-long break.

Superintendent Jason Messer said that revised calendar provided a better balance of the instruction days during the fall and spring months.

MUSD will have 175 days of classroom instruction rather than 180. The recent state budget agreement allowed temporary flexibility for public schools to go with the reduced days without penalty.

At Tuesday’s meeting at the district administration building, 2271 W. Louise Ave., the board is scheduled again to discuss the student calendar during the 7 p.m. open session.
In other agenda items:

•Messer will recognize members of the honor choir, honor band, and the Nelson Zanc Award recipients in his reports to the board. He’ll also pay tribute to classified employees of the year and recognize those schools and groups providing fundraising efforts to help the earthquake victims of Haiti.

•The South San Joaquin Irrigation District is scheduled to present a grant award to the Great Valley School Ag Day committee.

The Measure M committee will provide its 2009 audit report.

•The board is scheduled to discuss the proposed caution crossing at Carolyn Weston Boulevard at Greenbelt in the Weston Ranch community.

•Trustees will discuss and possibly give direction on their revised policy regarding the education of homeless children.

•The board could accept the final completion of contract for the all-weather track at Sierra High by Ross F. Carroll, Inc.

•Trustees could also accept the final completion of contract for the Nutrition Services’ freezer by C.T. Brayton and Sons, Inc.
