LODI — “Select San Joaquin AgVenture 2010” will take place at the Lodi Grape Festival Grounds with nearly 3,000 third graders participating from the Stockton and Lincoln school districts. With everything from sheep shearing to goat milking to presentations on production and processing, this event promises to provide an exciting environment as children “explore the journey from the farm to their fridge”.

Kara Kirby, a third-grader from Brock Elliot School, recently was selected as the California winner of the Bonnie Plants Third Grade Cabbage program. She will be presented with her award at 11 a.m. during a short ceremony at the Bonnie Plants display at AgVenture.

“Select San Joaquin” is a partnership of San Joaquin County, San Joaquin Farm Bureau, local schools, Rancho San Miguel, and Food 4 Less grocery store chains. The primary goals of this program are to: 1) educate County residents to the variety, quality, availability and health benefits of locally grown produce, 2) increase the economic opportunities of agriculture in San Joaquin County hence increasing the overall economic base of the County, and; 3) educate and encourage area school-age children on the health and taste appeal of locally-grown produce.

Since its inception five years ago, “Select San Joaquin” has enjoyed great success.
