3-day Celtic Fair opens Friday at Mother Lode Fair

SONORA — America’s original Celtic Faire returns to the Mother Lode Fairgrounds this Friday, Saturday and Sunday March 12-14.

The 24th, Annual Sonora Celtic Faire will expand to three days of never ending excitement.  On Friday morning the festival begins with Celtic Family Day, featuring a full day of Celtic education and entertainment for all ages.

On Friday night, at 6 p.m., a large Celtic Faire kick-off party will take place on the Guinness Stage. The party is open to the public and features the musical groups Need- fire, 1916, Sligo Rags, the outrageous duo Dare Devil Chickens, and a wide selection of great food appetizers. All this party excitement if offered for only $30.    

As always, music will be the highlight of the faire. This year’s headliners include the Celtic sensation Molly’s Revenge. This rousing group combines bagpipes and fiddle to create a sound that will get everyone up and dancing. Other Celtic Rockers include Need Fire, 1916 Band, Wicked Tinkers, and Sligo Rags.  Traditional Celtic groups include, Nine 8’s Irish Band, Golden Bough, Black Irish Band, and three full Scottish Pipe bands marching along with many solo Celtic performers and dancers.   

Also on the schedule; is full contact jousting on horseback by knights in armor, Scottish Highland Games, Scottish & Irish modern clans, Sierra Spiral Dancers, Highland Scottish Dancers, Irish Step dancing groups, a historical village with 500 costumed re-enactors, longbow archery, street performers, a giant, Vikings, and a little Myth and Magic.

The Celtic Faire will host over 8o Celtic craftsmen & artisans, along with 12 special food & drink vendors that will surely please every taste! Brought back by popular demand with be the Scot’s & Irish-Whiskey Competition.  The best single malts and blends will be sampled and judged by the festivalgoers. They will also be featuring Guinness & Harp Ales on-tap like always. There is parking and shuttle bus service from the Sonora Wal-Mart through downtown Sonora to the fairgrounds!

The Celtic Faire starts Friday with Family Day 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  This new addition features only family oriented entertainment and educational demonstrations.

Tickets are $5 for children and $10 for adults.  

Friday Night Kick-off party starts at 7 p.m. and features three bands and tasty appetizers for $30 .

On Saturday gates open at 10 a.m. and close at 10 p.m. On Sunday gates open at 10 a.m. and close at 5 p.m. Saturday tickets are $ 18 in advance and $25 at the gate.  Sunday tickets are $16 in advance and $20 at the gate.  Children ages 6-12 are always $10 while those under 5 are free,.

A special Everything Ticket will be offered for all events, all three days for only $50.
