SALIDA – The Sierra High baseball team got a nice opening to its 2010 season, beating a talented Modesto Christian team 2-1 in the squads’ season debut.

Junior Dylan Debrouwer teamed up with Kenny Leasure to hold Modesto Christian to just two hits and a single run, helping Sierra open the season in the best fashion imaginable.

“Both Dylan and Kenny threw well,” Sierra head coach Jack Thomson said. “And we were able to play really good defense behind them.

“Our approach at the plate is still something that we need to work on.”

Leasure also contributed from the batters box, collecting an RBI hit in one of his three at-bats. Senior John Perez also got involved offensively, stroking a double for the Timberwolves.

Sierra (1-0) most definitely earned its first victory, battling Modesto Christian ace Nathan O’Leary for the hard-fought win. Sierra was only able to muster four hits against O’Leary, but that proved to be enough to give the hurler his first loss of the season.

“We saw a very good pitcher out there today,” Thomson said. “O’Leary threw very, very well. He is a big, strong left-hander and he threw a very good game.”

O’Leary tallied Modesto Christian’s only run with a fourth inning solo shot to cut Sierra’s lead to one.

The Timberwolves will try to make it back-to-back wins at 3:30 p.m. when they play host to the Atwater Falcons.

Cosumnes Oaks 13, Lathrop 5
LATHROP – The Spartans got a strong offensive showing, but they were unable to keep Cosumnes Oaks off the scoreboard in their non-league loss Wednesday.

Kevin Howard paced the club, going 3 for 4 with three stolen bases and a pair of runs scored, while teammate Gabriel Castellanos also finished the contest 3 for 4. Pablo Chavez went 2 for 4 with a double, a run scored and a RBI, before coming in and finishing the game in relief of starting pitcher Castellanos.

The two combined to give up nine hits in front of a defense that committed four errors.
