Sierra High broke open a close game with a six-run fourth inning and kept things out of reach with a dominant pitching performance from senior Gabby Hawkins in a non-league victory over Modesto High Wednesday.

Sierra (3-2) pushed itself over the .500 mark, winning their second game in as many days. Hawkins was her usual self, fanning 12 Panthers and holding Modesto to just one hit over seven innings of work. Offensively, Sierra got contributions from the entire line-up, getting multi-hit games from four of its nine starters.

“Each one of our players in the starting lineup came around to touch the plate,” Sierra head coach Nick Olmo said. “We hit the ball very well today, but we still had some trouble leaving seven runners on base.

“Overall we did a great job getting runs across the plate.”

Daylynn Penner led the Timberwolves, going 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs and a walk, while Alysia Atkins finished 2 for 4 with an RBI as did teammate Liz Brown. Hawkins helped her cause, going 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs and a triple. Chelsea Baretta went 1 for 2 for Sierra, with a triple and two RBIs.

Sierra will be back on the field Thursday when they travel to Tracy to take on the Bulldogs.
