MODESTO – The Sierra High sophomore baseball team got quality pitching from Mike Leland to cruise to an easy 6-1 non-league victory over Johansen Tuesday.

Sierra (2-1) got a superb effort from Leland and pitcher Tim Thorton, combining to hold the Vikings to just one hit in the contest.

Brett Wilson paced the offense, collecting three hits and driving in three runs. Mikana Ward made his presence felt, banging out a double and a RBI single in the win.

Sierra will be back on the diamond Friday when they travel to Turlock to take on the Bulldogs, followed by a non-league culminating home game against Stagg Monday. The Timberwolves will kick off Valley Oak League action Tuesday when they meet up with Weston Ranch in Stockton.

Manteca 13, Lathrop 1

The Buffaloes got up early and never let up, blasting Lathrop High their VOL opener.

Manteca (1-0 VOL, 4-4 overall) got an impressive pitching performance from Danny Gouveia. Gouveia was dominant for five innings, striking out 11 and going 3 for 4 at the plate, scoring a run and driving in three.

Alex Martinez went 2 for 3 and scored three times, while Ricky Cross also finished the blowout 2 for 3 at the plate. Anthony Costa went 2 for 4, scoring twice and driving in three with a home run.

The two teams will meet up again Thursday at Lathrop High.

Escalon 4, East Union 1

ESCALON – The Lancers found themselves in a jam in the second inning and could find no answer in their non-league loss to Escalon Tuesday.

“We just couldn’t get out of that second inning,” Lancer head coach Mike James said. “They sent nine to the plate, scored three runs off five walks, three wild pitches and four passed balls.

“It’s hard to defend that; we have to get better.”

John Olague was solid in his relief effort, tossing five innings of shutout ball including seven strikeouts. Olague also went 1 for 3 at the plate with an RBI double.
