Firefighters getting handle on Markleeville

MARKLEEVILLE (AP) — After nearly two weeks, a 28-square-mile blaze south of Markleeville in Alpine County is more than 55 percent contained.

More than 1,100 firefighters fought the fire on Monday but that number is down to 860 Tuesday.

Crews could get help fighting the wildfire from Mother Nature Tuesday.

Weather forecasters have predicted cooler temperatures Tuesday with a chance of thunderstorms accompanied by intermittent rain showers over the fire area.

All state highways through the fire are currently open to through traffic. This includes State Highway 4 over Ebbetts Pass and State Highway 89, east over Monitor Pass to Highway 395.

Most area campgrounds have reopened. The fire was sparked by lightning on June 19.
