Fifth-grade students at Lincoln Elementary School are looking to feed the hungry for upcoming holiday.

They’re known as “The Room Nine Kids.” Led by their teacher Tammy Brecht Dunbar, these youngsters will be using the annual KCRA Kids Can food drive as a kick-off to their global World Wonder Day project.

The World Wonder Day consists of Dunbar’s class being paired by another intermediate grade class. In this case, “The Room Nine Kids” and teacher Iro Stefopoulou’s class in Greece are linked online via Skype, sharing their findings while discussing ideas and creating an action plan to change the world – “one can at a time,” Dunbar said.

She indicated that students have brainstormed ideas in class, collaborating in small groups. Studying propaganda and other forms of persuasion, the students wondered if advertising might help their project.

In a matter of days, “The Room Nine Kids” created a classroom window display, which can be seen next to the school office at 750 E. Yosemite Ave.

As for feeding the hungry, “The Room 9 Kids” are collecting food, challenging themselves and the City of Manteca to join in for this endeavor.

“We’re hoping to collect at least 500 cans,” said student Israa Zambrano. “But if we get more, that would be amazing and (could) feed even more families.”

Those seeking to help out can drop off their canned or non-perishable goods at the main office from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. by Friday, Nov. 13.

Added Dunbar: “Don’t forget to mention it’s for The Room Nine Kids’ World Wonder Project.”

World Wonder Day connects students around the world in a discussion of local food banks. They relate to what students are learning in school, and how they will use what they learned to make a positive impact in their community.
