LATHROP – The East Union Lancers got an impressive outing from starting pitcher Colby Seibel, who went the distance in East Union’s 12-2 Valley Oak League victory over the Lathrop Spartans Monday.

Seibel was brilliant in his effort, holding Lathrop to a run in the first and a run in the second for the complete-game win. Seibel got all the support he’d need with a three-run first inning from his teammates. East Union (1-2 VOL, 6-7) would add two more in the second, before blowing the Spartans out of reach with a three-spot in the fifth and four more in the sixth.

Lathrop (0-5, 2-9) realistically had reason to smile during the contest, battling for five innings before things slipped out of control. The Spartans faced a 5-2 deficit going into the fourth inning, leaving themselves reason to believe they’re getting closer.

“Regardless of the outcome I thought our kids competed and I think that we are starting to put things into perspective about who we are,” Spartans head coach Randy Baltazar said. “Our pitchers threw well and our defense did what they could to help them out.

“The game was a lot closer than what it turned out in the fifth and sixth inning.”

Stephen Gigli and Joe Modesto both finished with a hit, with Gigli scoring twice and Modesto driving in a run with a double. Justin Dias went 2 for 3 and scored twice, while Ricky Inderbitzin finished 1 for 3 with 3 RBIs.

Seibel struck out one and did not walk a batter in the win, while Lathrop starter Kevin Howard tossed 3 1/3, surrendering six runs on three walks and four hits. Pablo Chavez came on in relief, giving up seven runs and striking out three.

Both clubs will be back on the diamond today as the Spartans play host to Sonora High and East Union travels to Stockton to take on Weston Ranch. First pitch in both games is scheduled for 4 p.m.
