The Weston Ranch Cougars have battled throughout the opening stages of the Valley Oak League season, but things jelled like they haven’t all year as the Cougars annihilated East Union high 16-5 in league play Tuesday.

Antonio Joseph twirled a complete-game four hitter, holding the Lancers to a pair of runs in the first and fourth and a single run in the mercy-shortened final fifth inning. Joseph helped his cause going 2 for 3 at the plate with a double.

Akiha Etu held the big stick for the Cougars (1-2 VOL, 5-7 overall), blasting a pair of homeruns and driving in three. Etu smashed his first bomb in the opening inning and wasn’t finished, leaving the yard a second time in the top of the fourth.

J.R. Williams got in on the act following up a tremendous defensive play with a three-run bomb of his own.

East Union (1-3, 6-8) got a solid effort from Brett Riley, who led the club with a 2 fro 3 performance including a double. The two clubs will be back on the diamond Thursday when they meet in Weston Ranch.

Sonora 18, Lathrop 1
LATHROP – The Sonora Wildcats jumped all over the Spartans for a 18-1 win Tuesday in VOL action. The Wildcats were able to get to Lathrop starter Oscar Calix in a hurry, before pushing Lathrop into the bullpen.

Offensively, Lathrop got a strong showing from Mikey Pereznegron who led the club with a 2 for 3 effort. Alex Moreno also finished with two hits, while teammate Kevin Howard finished the contest 1 for 2. The two teams will meet up Thursday in Sonora.
