They were the four words that Belinda Guzman never wanted to hear.

Your daughter has leukemia.

With such an earth-shattering revelation shaking her very existence to the core, Guzman – who wanted to stay as strong as possible for her daughter – began looking into programs through the American Cancer Society while young Allie was preparing to undergo treatment.

And she found what she was looking for – the Relay for Life.

A 24-hour event held on the same day in thousands of locations across the country, the relay – which features teams that can either run, walk, or raise money to go towards cancer research and finding the cure – had been growing steadily in Manteca, and Guzman jumped in headfirst to help out any way she possibly could.

It was an eye-opening experience, and it became something that she would keep supporting even as her daughter’s leukemia went into remission.

Friday morning, Guzman gathered with her daughter and a handful of friends and supporters for a yard sale at 308 N. Fremont Avenue to raise money for the 2010 Relay for Life – taking place on May 1 and 2 at Sierra High School.

With every dollar going towards research and the ultimate goal, Guzman – who will hold the yard sale again today from 8 a.m. until people stop showing up – hopes to get a jump on the fundraising and raise awareness at the same time.

“By doing this you know you’re a part of something good that is helping people,” Guzman said. “We’re just blessed that she was able to make it and is still here with us today, and want other people to be able to have that experience.”

Donations made out to Manteca Relay for Life will be accepted at the garage sale today, and Guzman’s team – Team Allie Cat – has a website that can be found at www.main.acsevents.org/goto/AllieCat
