CERES – The Central Valley Hawks battled valiantly for seven innings, but the squad was unable to score a run, falling to the Manteca Buffaloes 1-0 in Valley Oak League action Thursday at Central Valley.

Manteca pushed across the game’s lone run in the top-half of the third inning, and it proved to be more than enough for starting pitcher Matt Barber. Barber was efficient in the win, scattering just three hits and striking out one in a complete-game shutout.

Matt Burrows was the only player to record a multiple-hit game, going 2 for 3 with a double. Michael Timmins also got a hit, going 1 for 3, while Barber helped his cause with a base hit as well.

“We had a good quality team effort today,” Manteca head coach Gene Ballardo said. “We’re progressing and we will be ready to pick up where we left on Tuesday.”

Manteca (6-2 VOL, 11-6-1) will be on the road Tuesday when it opens its home-home series with the Sonora Wildcats. The Wildcats are still perfect in VOL play, coming off a lopsided 13-1 victory over the Sierra Timberwolves last Tuesday.

Ceres 5, Weston Ranch 3
CERES – The Cougars jumped out to a 1-0 early lead, but could not respond to a four-run third inning in the squad’s VOL loss Thursday.

Akiha Etu led the club, going 3 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs. Christian Vasquez finished 1 for 4 with a double and a run scored and Tyler Scharnow went the distance on the bump, doing a good job of silencing the Ceres’ bats except for the rough third frame.

“I was proud of the way the guys competed after getting sort of pushed around Tuesday,” Weston Ranch head coach Dave Smith said. “The key all season has been consistency for us. We’ve spotted the other teams some games so far, so hopefully now we can move on and play consistently for the rest of our games.”

Weston Ranch (1-5, 5-10) will have its hands full Tuesday as they roll out the welcome mats for the defending VOL champion Oakdale Mustangs.
