The excitement is not only in the chase, but also watching canine police officers put their four-legged partners through their paces every year at the 40th annual Manteca police dog trials in Morenzone Park  on  Saturday at Center Street at Union Road.

Retired Manteca officer Grant Flory is competing with his canine “Spike” in the retired category having won numerous awards during his years on the street.  There will be as many as 50 police dogs and their handler officers at the event this year.

The canine trials include narcotics detection, search, agility, obedience and protection phases.  The narcotics detection phase is set to be held Friday evening at the city facility on Industrial Park Drive.  The patrol canine categories are to begin at 8 a.m. Saturday morning and will include the obedience, search and agility phases.

A Saturday afternoon trial begins at 1 p.m. involving handler protection and apprehension phases.
