Gunzon is MUSD student trustee

Sophia Gunzon of Sierra High is being sworn in tonight as the Manteca Unified School District student board member.
The meeting takes place at 7 p.m. at the district office, 2271 West Louise Ave.
Andrew Brunn of Manteca High will be sworn in as the alternate student board member.
Under California law, local school boards can create a student board member position. They can participate in board discussions on issues before votes and under state law can cast an advisory vote just before the official vote although their vote doesn’t count. They are not allowed in closed door sessions.

Write-in filing for
Manteca City Council
Manteca City Clerk Lisa Blackmon notes the filing period for write-in candidate for the Nov. 8 Manteca City Council election are now underway.
Signatures of 20 registered voters from within Manteca’s city limits are required for write-in candidates to qualify for the ballot. Their name will not appear on the ballot although a list of eligible write-in candidates is provided at polling places. They also cannot have a statement put in the voters’ guide. The filling closes Oct. 25.

The critical role the Altamont Corridor Express will initially play in the state’s high speed rail service is among the service upgrades and improved connectivity San Joaquin Rail Commission personnel will be sharing at a town hall meeting on Thursday, Sept. 15, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Manteca Civic Center, 1001 W. Center St.
Plans call for ACE to be extended to Merced within 5 to 10 years with stops in downtown Manteca, Ripon, Turlock, Livingston or Atwater, and Merced. The first goal is to increase train trips by 50 percent to six daily round trips by 2019. After that the goal is for at least 10 daily round trips by 2023.
