CENTRAL VALLEY — The magic number is now 1 for Manteca High’s tennis team.

The Buffaloes soundly defeated Central Valley 5-0 in a Valley Oak League make-up match Monday and are a win away from clinching their third conference title in four years.

Manteca remains in step with Ceres, which is also 12-1 while sharing the top spot with the Buffaloes. Manteca rounds out the regular season against Sierra at Union Road Tennis Courts Thursday.

“We’re nearing the end of the season, and we want to make sure to get a share of the league title,” said Manteca coach Frank Fontana, whose team already has a Sac-Joaquin Section team playoff berth shored up. “The guys have worked really hard for that.

Alex Barragan turned in a 6-3, 6-4 win from the No. 1 singles spot. No. 2 Alex McAdams (6-2, 6-3) and Marc Leon (6-0, 6-1) also won in straight sets.

The doubles matches were just as one-sided, with Oral Nunis and Max Angelo rolling to a 6-0, 6-1 sweep; and Xavier Lopez and Marcus Munoz coasting, 6-1, 6-3.

Thursday’s match with Sierra should provide a good tune-up for the VOL Singles and Doubles tournaments, which take place May 4 and 6 at Central Valley.

“We’re starting to play better as a team, and hopefully we can do some damage in the (SJS) team tournament and get some (individuals) through.”
