East Union High’s golf team turned in exceptional round for the majority of the squads in the Valley Oak League, but its effort Wednesday was only good enough to stay close to the league leading Oakdale Mustangs in a 208-217 loss at Manteca Golf Course.

The Lancers (12-3 VOL) were led by a standout effort from Will Brink, who turned in a 1 over par 38 to guide his East Union teammates. Tanner Bragg shot a solid 40, while Kyle Harmon finished his nine-hole round in 43 strokes.

Jordan Duval shot a 45, Guillermo Barajas shot a 51, and Evan Lewis was the throw out score with a 52.

East Union voided its opportunity to hand the Mustangs their second VOL loss, leaving the squad one final shot at the league crown with a dominant performance in the league championships Tuesday at Greenhorn Creek in Angels Camp.

“Sometimes even after a loss you get better and hopefully that is what will happen here,” Lancers head coach Dennis Wells said. “If we can go in there and win the VOL tournament then we can still win league.

“So maybe this was for the best.”

Brink’s round mirrored his season to date, providing East Union with a sturdy round to count on after a dismal start left Harmon struggling to finish close to par.

“I hate to lose more than anybody,” Wells said. “But I am real proud of the way Will Brink and Tanner played; I have to even say Kyle Harmon as well. He started off with an 11, so to come back and finish playing even-par, that’s pretty good.”

Oakdale (15-1) was led by Austin Whitworth’s 1 under par 36, followed by freshman Ian Stoogdel’s 41.
