RIPON – Earlier in the season the Ripon Christian golf team dealt the Ripon Indians a difficult defeat, but the Indians were able to get a taste of revenge with their 218-242 Trans Valley League win over the Knights Wednesday at Spring Creek Golf and Country Club.

Ripon (6-2) used another team-leading round from freshman Andrew Bonner, who finished the nine-hole par-37 round even, closing two-strokes ahead of Ripon Christian’s Logan Vos for medalist honors.

Nick Mendonca turned in a 4 over par 41, while Josh Richter and Zach Capel shot 42 and 48, respectively. Mark Bigelow rounded out the Indians’ scorecard with a 50.

“This was going to be a tough match for us because we lost to them earlier this year,” Ripon head coach Chris Musseman said. “It was time for us to try and get one back from them, and we were able to do that.

“I was really expecting it to be a lot closer than it was.”

Ripon Christian (4-4) was obviously led by Vos’ impressive 2 over par round, but the Knights were only able to card two more rounds that were at least bogey-golf. Ross Van Gronigan shot 42 for the Knights, while teammate Tim Hoeksma finished with a 46. Ben Deruiter and Christian Manes tallied a 56 and a 59, respectively.

Ripon will have to keep at it, walking into arguably the two most important match’s of the season when they meet up with Escalon today and then Modesto Christian Monday.

“My kids know that if we want to win league than we are going to have to win out,” Musseman said. “There is no room for error for us at this point. With this win, it helps us try and get second place and move on into (Sac-Joaquin Section) Divisionals.

“The next two matches will be the big ones, because those are the two teams that we are competing with.”
