Thaera Schluer and her family are no strangers to Sparkles the Clown.

They’ve had the local entertainer of parties, company gatherings, weddings, carnivals, school assemblies, and various other functions over at their Manteca home.

“We’re had Sparkles at two of my children’s birthdays as well as her husband, Ravioli, for another (party),” said Thaera, who, along with her sister, Elizabeth Hamdan, brought her two children, Lela, 4, and Collins, 2, to the special Friends of the Library function held at the Manteca Branch on Wednesday.

Needless to say, both youngsters were excited about Sparkles’ visit. For it was just last week that they caught her act at the Golden Corral in Tracy.

“She comes here (to the Manteca Library Branch) at least once a year,” said Story Time Lady Ruthanne Bassett. “We occasionally try to change things up.”

Each Wednesday, the local branch has story time for youngsters of all ages at 4 p.m., with next week’s event scheduled for Save Mart on Yosemite Avenue.

Youngsters mostly under age 10 jam-packed the McFall Room to catch Sparkles do a bit of her magic (she made a bottle of Coke disappear). But mostly they laughed, clapped their hands, and made plenty of noise.

She also read a book, “Quick as a Cricket.”

Sparkles brought out her assortment of puppets and stuffed animals. She also performed “Singing in the Rain,” using an assortment of prop umbrellas.

Sparkles kept the roomful of youngsters entertained for the entire hour. But that’s something she been used to doing for the better part of 10 years.

In 1997, Terry Donaldson first appeared as “Sparkles” at Fourth of July parade in Tracy. The previous year, she wore the clown costume and pretended to rollerblade. Her falls received plenty of laughs.

Soon after, Miss Sparkles Delights launched her career. As of January, she’s entertained in over 3,580 various events.

The next storytime event is Wednesday, Feb. 18, at the West Yosemite Avenue Save Mart. Storytime is free.
