Jackie Ketner has always been one to rely on her defense to make plays, and her defense came through for the final out of Thursday’s Valley Oak League contest with Lathrop at Northgate Softball Complex.

As far as winning goes, the fifth and final inning was just a formality for the Lancers, who cruised to a 12-0 victory to improve to 9-2 in league and 17-5 overall.

Perfection, however, was still at stake.

Ketner was in danger of blowing that herself while facing Lathrop’s clean-up hitter to start the fifth, falling behind 3-0 in the count before firing three straight strikes for her seventh and final strikeout of the game.

She then fielded a grounder for the second out, but the third was a doozy.

Third baseman Cherie DeJesus made a diving stop to rob a base hit, then, while on one knee, fired it across the infield to preserve Ketner’s first-ever varsity perfect game.

“DJ (De Jesus) didn’t know, and when I told her that she saved Jackie’s perfect game she said she was glad she didn’t know,” East Union coach Brian Goulart said. “It’s pretty exciting.

“Jackie has just done an awesome job for us, and I’m so proud of her. We are thankful that she emerged this year, because she makes us a better team.”

Run support was never in question.

Eight of the team’s 11 hits came from the first to fifth spots in the order, with Cassie Waggy highlighting the barrage with a three-run homer. She and Kourtni McCall were both 2 for 2. Leadoff batter Jillian Goulart and DeJesus were each 2 for 3.

With Ceres (7-3) dropping a 6-4 decision to Sierra Wednesday, East Union catapulted itself to sole possession of second place while remaining a half game behind Oakdale.

East Union next hosts Manteca at Northgate Softball Complex Monday for a make-up game originally scheduled for Wednesday.
