Manteca leaders will decide Tuesday whether to keep the 200 word limit on candidates statements for the mayor’s post and two open council seats or else double it to 400 words in the upcoming Nov. 2 municipal election.

Whatever the council opts to go with, the candidates who decide to have a candidate’s statement as part of the sample ballot will be on the hook for the actual cost of that portion of printing and distribution of the voter information.

The terms of Mayor Willie Weatherford as well as council members Vince Hernandez and John Harris are up in November.

Weatherford has already indicated he is running for re-election. Three others have declared their intention to challenge him including Ben Cantu, Samuel Anderson, and Richard Behling.

Hernandez and Harris have yet to announce their plans.

Manteca’s share of the countywide election costs in November is expected to be about $79,000 or $3 per voter to pay for printing, distribution, and the actual costs of conducting the voting and ballot count.

The City Council meets Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Civic Center, 1001 W. Center St.
