FRESNO — Sierra High junior Alex Nuanez is used to facing wrestlers bigger and older than him, but he took the experience to another level this past weekend in the Greco Roman State Championships this past weekend at Selland Arena.

Nuanez, representing Stockton Elite Wrestling, defeated Matthew Cox 0-1, 1-0, 7-0 for third place Sunday in the FILA Junior division’s 185-pound weight class.

Nuanez was named the Bulletin’s All-Area Wrestler of the Year this past winter after becoming Sierra’s first California Interscholastic Federation State Championships qualifier. He squared off with two collegiate grapplers this past weekend and fared well against the competition.

“It was good experience,” Nuanez said. “I was the youngest in the age group, so competing at the college level and taking third is pretty big.”

Nuanez opened with a 5-0, 1-3, 3-7 loss to eventual runner-up Issac Archibeque. He later cruised to the third-place match with technical falls over Estevan Ponce (6-0, 6-0) and Tyree Cox (7-0, 6-0).

Daisy Valencia, Jaidyn Valencia, Julia Vezaldenos, Emma Brierly and Jazmyn Rodriguez also found the net for United Red. Callie Crain manned the goal for the team with help from defenders Kayley Alvarado, Julissa Pimentel and Olivia Ortega.
