Some 35 students from the San Joaquin County and Manteca Unified special needs program took part in Thursday’s annual Happy Valentine’s Day.

In fact, those involved had a chance to sing, dance, and spent time with many familiar faces at the function held in the Manteca High cafeteria.

Organizer Darsi Wilson, who helps out in Brad Stone’s special needs class, called it a collaborative effort.

“We started making plans as far back as October,” she said.

Manteca High’s floriculture class, for starters, made possible the corsages while the leadership class was involved in the setting up and cleaning up. The student store kicked in $300 and the cafeteria served up the pizzas.

Ghirardelli and Food-4-Less made possible the Valentine’s candies, Save Mart contributed the cookies, and Tim 2 DJ Service provided the music.

Other donors were Wal-Mart (Denise Lua, decorations), Target (Kathy Hill, toys), Monogram Magic (queen sash), Manteca Moose Lodge (toys), Julie Garza (balloons), Laura Conway (toys), and Teresa Rossi (toys).

One of the highlights of the afternoon was the crowning of a king and queen. “All of our candidates were nominated by their teachers,” Wilson said.

In the end, Tim Jones was crowned king while Christina Norman reigned as queen.

The king candidates included Luis Trevino, Mitchell Spencer, Kyle Luna, and Justin Daniel.

Emily Valdez, Olivia Aranda, Samantha Shaw, and Angelia Collins were among the queen candidates.
