MODESTO — Three Riponites qualified for the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III Individual Tournament.

Ripon Christian’s boys doubles team of Josiah Neeley and Nick Wehrli were locked in a heated match with Riverbank’s Irvin Carrillo and Armando Rodriguez for the Trans Valley League Tournament title Friday at SOS Club.

The Neeley-Wehrli tandem prevailed 10-9 (13-11 tiebreaker). The same two teams met again Saturday in the section-qualifying tournament.

Neeley and Wehrli claimed the first set 6-4 and were up 3-1 in the second before Carrillo and Rodriguez defaulted out of the match with an injury.

Also moving on is Ripon’s Chris Kem, who dropped a 2-6, 3-6 decision to Jack Berry of Escalon in the boys singles title match. The champions and runner-ups from Saturday’s tournament advance.

The Division III Tournament is Thursday and Friday at Oak Park in Stockton.

In other intra-league doubles tournament action Friday, Ripon’s Jared Ratto and Patrick Scott defeated RC’s Brad Kamper and Dan McGill for the No. 2 boys title. Ripon Christian’s No. 2 girls team of Denise Dole and Victoria Vallo defeated Hailey Metzler and Mary Merseth of Escalon, 10-5.

Ripon Christian, which went 10-2 in the regular season and finished second in league, opens the SJS Division III team co-ed playoffs today on the road against Western Athletic Conference champion Central Catholic.

Ripon Christian’s Sherwin Heyboer was named the TVL’s Coach of the Year, and seven of his athletes earned all-league honors. Leading the way were top singles players Landon Tillema and Katie den Dulk.

Knights joining them on the all-league list were: Neeley and Wehrli, Amanda Thatcher and doubles partners Colleen Kamper and Haley Veilleux.

Ripon players earning all-league recognition were: Kem, Matt Mendonca, Tanner Clarke and Steve Murdoch.

Hughson’s Alan Barth and Escalon’s Kaitlyn Brayton are the TVL’s Most Valuable Players.
