In an effort to brighten up historic downtown, the Ripon Chamber Foundation recently added strands of lights along Main Street.

The “Light Up Ripon” program allows for residents, businesses and other groups to sponsor a light pole with their names featured on a 2- by 4- inch plaque for $100.

At last week’s Ripon City Council meeting, Tamra Spade, who is the Chamber president and CEO, was on hand as elected leaders accepted the donation valued at $5,900 without discussion.

She indicated that the first part of the project consisted of the strands of lights adorning Main Street, from Stockton Avenue to Acacia Avenue. Spade gave thanks to Darryl Bartels, John Mangelos, and Dave Haggerty for their recent efforts.

The other part of the plan calls for lighting up Main Street, from Acacia to Wilma Avenue.

The Chamber Foundation looked at this project as way of adding some atmosphere to downtown. Couple that with the outdoor dining plan that will allow for certain Main Street restaurants to serve adult beverages thanks to an ordinance change that recently received the OK from council.

“We did take that into consideration,” Spade said.

She added that lights have the lifespan of about five years and can be changed, in and out, for the holidays.

Chamber, in addition, will be working with Public Works to determine how to attach the plaques, which could be removed once the lights are no longer in operation and not replaced.
