When Bob Tanon first discovered Rita’s Italian Ice on a trip to Pennsylvania to visit family more than two decades ago, he fell in love.
With their house-made frozen custard and Italian ice treats, the Pennsylvania native even went so far as to plan his future trips back east around how many times he and his family would be able to get themselves the frozen delicious treats that the Philadelphia-born company is known for.
And now he’s bringing that love to the people of Manteca.
On Tuesday, May 23, Tanon is officially opening the doors to a Rita’s Italian Ice franchise on Hulsey Way that he believes will cater to both travelers along the Highway 99 corridor as well as nearly all segments of Manteca.
It’ll be his second retail location after the one he opened in Stockton, where he lives. He plans on opening another as well as one in Tracy to bring his number of franchises to four within the next two years.
“I think that people in Manteca need a delicious frozen treat like this, and when they taste it and see the difference between what they’re used to I think they’re going to fall in love just like I did,” Tanon said while construction crews finished up working on the building’s interior. “We make things fresh daily and the custard is award-winning and I think that people that haven’t already had it are really going to like it.”
And if you’ve been to one of Manteca’s larger social functions in the last year, there’s a good chance you’ve already tasted some of Rita’s famous frozen delicacies.
Once he opened his Stockton location and secured a franchise for Manteca as well, Tanon purchased a 26-foot food truck so that he can take his operation on the road and to people who might not otherwise make it to the storefront location.
The truck made an appearance at the Crossroads Street Faire, and will be at a pair of upcoming functions at East Union High School as well as every East Union home football game this season.
Tanon, who worked in banking before opening a gymnastics business in Stockton, is no stranger to Manteca.
He worked at Delta National Bank in the mid 1980s. He said while the city has changed significantly since then, it is still home to the friendly and accepting people that he remembers from his career in finance.
“Manteca’s a progressive place and I think they need a quality cold treat restaurant and that’s the market that we’re hoping to tap into,” Tanon said. “And this is a good location for us here, in close proximity to other eateries here which I think brings in a lot of business and traffic to the location.
“It’s going to really convenient for people to reach this place from all parts of the community, and it’s a community that we’re happy to be a part of.”
Rita’s Italian Ice opens at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 23. Once the soft opening arrives, the restaurant will be open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. For more information about Rita’s Italian Ice, located at 1445 Hulsey Way behind In-N-Out Burger, call 209.222.3989 or search for Rita’s of Manteca on Facebook.
