CLOVIS — Ty Wells got to stand a couple steps higher on the Clovis Olympic Swim Complex’s medal podium Saturday in the CIF State Swimming and Diving Championships.

Making his third appearance at the state meet, the Ripon High junior raced to a runner-up finish in the 100-yard breaststroke, losing to training partner and year-round teammate Andrew Britton of Gregori.

Wells entered the championship heat with the top-seeded time of 54.87 seconds, which stood as the fastest mark after the second day. Britton, the Sac-Joaquin Section champion in the event, narrowly got his revenge on Day 2, finishing in 54.94 against Wells’ 55.18. They were one of seven finalists to clock All-American times.

For Wells, it was an improvement from his 2016 state appearance. Last year, he placed fourth in 55.77 while then Sierra senior Scott Tolman, another longtime friend and Ripon Aquatics teammate, took second.

Wells also competed in the 100 fly for a second straight year. He finished fourth (49.61) in the consolation finals and 12th overall. Last year he did not make it out of the opening day in the event.
