Joel Olmos made his only year at Manteca High count.
A standout receiver on the Buffaloes Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV championship football team in the fall, the senior transfer from Lincoln of San Jose was named the Valley Oak League’s Offensive Player of the Year for baseball.
Olmos batted leadoff and started in center field for Manteca (10-4 VOL, 20-9 overall), which finished second in league and took eventual SJS Division III champion Christian Brothers to a winner-take-all third game in the semifinal round. Olmos led the Buffs in batting average (.483), on-base percentage (.574), hits (43) and runs (36).
Bryce Kirk of league champion Oakdale (14-0, 25-7) was voted Most Valuable Player. Nate Gregory is Coach of the Year. The Mustangs has six players on the all-league first team. They dropped a 5-2 decision in the section title game Monday.
Manteca underclassmen Alex Gouveia and Ryan Ward join Olmos on the all-league first team. Gouveia hit .354, plated 22 runs and boasted a .979 fielding percentage at shortstop. Ward, a freshman pitcher, compiled an 11-1 record with a 1.18 ERA and 88 strikeouts in 71 innings as the staff ace.
Third-place Sierra (9-5, 15-10) is represented by senior third baseman Jesse Babauta (.361, 15 steals) and junior outfielder Jacob Peterson (.373, eight doubles, 18 RBIs).
East Union (8-6, 14-10) has three all-league first-team selections in junior catcher Brayden Hardcastle (.397, three HRs, 22 RBIs), senior second baseman Gyse Hulsebosch (.419, 20 runs) and junior outfielder Mason James (.316, 15 RBIs).
Senior outfielder Manuel Rubio (.360, 20 RBIs), a four-year varsity player, is the lone all-league player for Weston Ranch (5-9, 14-12). The Cougars did have the most all-league second-team players with five: junior pitcher Rylan Tinsley, senior infielders Larry Martinez and C.J. Drain and sophomores Carlos Drain and Austin Cappas.
Others making the second team are East Union sophomore pitcher Andrew Morones, Lathrop junior pitcher Shawn Cummings, Sierra senior catcher Jaden Pina and Manteca junior infielder Kyle Rachels.
