One young lady – a teen attending academy – stood out at the Manteca Boys & Girls Club breakfast Thursday as some 150 children were being served their ham, eggs and pancakes by Manteca Rotarians.

Kristy Denton, 16, is interested in medicine and says she is learning a lot at the vocational school focusing on a medical future. It is located near the Manteca Unified School District Office on Louise Avenue at Airport Way.

Kristy found a spot to eat at a table just beyond the ones where the boys and girls were eating and not having a chair she knelt on the floor at a folding table – very comfortable with her location. When she finished she hurried over to the folding chair cart and began placing chairs into the receptacles.

She said she hopes to go into the military – probably the Navy – after her high school graduation leaning toward becoming a medic.  When she leaves the military she is planning to finish college she hopes to become a nurse in labor and delivery.

As members of the county’s summer youth program, many have  found their first time jobs, learning job skills in the process but Kristy noted  she had already volunteered at other places including many hours with the Give Every Child a Chance tutoring program.

Students in the program have often used their money to buy school clothes and help with family bills. Kristy has two older brothers and one younger sister.

During the breakfast, club members filed in a single line by where the Rotary Club members were dishing out their scrambled eggs and hot pancakes coming off the grills.  Orange juice and syrup added to the morning fare.

Kristy’s work station at the Boys and Girls Club is at the front desk and the snack bar.
