Delicato plans two August wine events

Do you enjoy the grape?
You don’t have to go very far to visit wine country.
You’re living in it.
San Joaquin County is the undisputed leader in California — and the United States —with 73,275 acres devoted to growing grapes for wine. Stanislaus County is next at 59,508 acres, followed by Sonoma County at 59,508 acres, Monterey County at 45,416 acres, and Napa County at 45,339 acres.
There are also more than 90 wineries in San Joaquin County, with most clustered around Lodi where vineyards produce 40 percent of California’s premium Zinfandel grapes. There are also wineries in Tracy, Ripon, and Manteca.
Manteca’s winery is no slouch. It is among the top eight wineries in the country and still manages to be one of the community’s best kept secrets as a week doesn’t go by that someone isn’t surprised to find a world-class winery with an appealing wine tasting room right in Manteca’s backyard. The winery is a popular stop for Highway 99 travelers, many from out-of-state who stop by once a year to buy wine by the case.
Delicato Family Vineyards has been working hard to grab the attention of Manteca’s newer residents to make them aware of what is offered. The wine tasting room is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and has free tasting.
There are exceptions such as special events. Coming up on Saturday, Aug. 5, is the second installment of Delicato’s Summer Artisan Market series from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. You can stay cool inside, sip wine, and shop for local items ranging from fresh food, jewelry, handcrafted items, and more.
The wine tasting fee is $5. (It is waived for Delicato Wine Club members.) There is no entry fee to browse the artisan market.
Also taking place in August is a longstanding Delicato tradition — a two-hour winemaking workshop on Saturday, Aug. 19, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Tuscan Room of the winery.
It is designed to help people develop home winemaking skills as well as improve their current skills.
Tasting Room manager Richard Foote with more than 25 years of experience in home winemaking will provide a basic presentation on fermentation with tank samples on hand to demonstrate the distinct stages leading from juice to wine.
The fee is $10 for non-wine club members, $7 for Caterina Club members, and $5 for Gaspare Club members. Class size is limited to 40. You need to call (209.824.3401) or email ( early to reserve your seat at the workshop.
Ripon is home to another top eight winery — The Wine Group. The No. 1 winery in the United States is Gallo in Modesto followed closely by Bronco Wines in Ceres. Of the four major players, only Delicato has a wine tasting room that is accessed four miles north of Manteca via French Camp Road (Exit 246).
California grows 117 varieties of wine grapes and produces 90 percent of all wine in the United States. It is the fourth largest wine producer in the world behind France, Italy, and Spain.
