It’s been a busy summer season for the Lathrop Parks and Recreation Department.
There was the July 1st celebration – a hybrid combination of the city’s annual birthday celebration and the Fourth of July – that drew hundreds of people. There were the handful of Movies in the Park events at locations throughout the city that always had a turnout. There were classes and there were sports leagues – lessons and learning.
And even though summer is quickly drawing to a close, the department still has one more trick up its sleeve to give residents the opportunity to come out and celebrate with their friends and neighbors in a fun, family-friendly atmosphere.
What would the end of summer be without a party to commemorate its conclusion?
On Friday, Aug. 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Mossdale Landing Community Park, the City of Lathrop will be hosting its second annual End of Summer Family Fun Night. It is an event featuring food venders, inflatables, carnival games and a handful of other fun activities designed for families to enjoy together.
“We had a good turnout when we did this last year – I believe we had a couple hundred people – and so it’s something that we wanted to do again to give residents something to do during a time when most activities like this have already winded down,” said Lathrop Parks and Recreation Director Zach Jones. “And it allows us to get the word out about other programs that we have coming up to people that we wouldn’t otherwise get the opportunity to interact with so it’s very beneficial to the department as well.”
Jones, who has been with the City of Lathrop since 2014, brought some of the ideas he implemented in his nearly 25 years with the Cosumnes Community Services District in Elk Grove to Lathrop and attendance at community functions has been rising since his arrival.
The end of the summer celebration however, he said, will also be a partnership with other community organizations like the Lathrop Sunrise Rotary who will be hosting the Rain Gutter Regatta.  It is a fun event where small boats constructed prior to the event will be raced in a rain gutter to add something fun and unique to the festivities.
The cost for individual boats to enter the regatta is $10, and business boats are $25. The boats can be purchased in advance at either the Lathrop Community Center or the Lathrop Generations Center.
A handful of food trucks and vendors including Fagundes Meats and Catering, Kona Ice Shaved Hawaiian ice and a local taco truck will be featured, as will a dessert vendor. A kid’s carnival will also be featured, and additional fun elements featured last year like balloon tiers and magicians may make an appearance this year.
