Weston Ranch junior quarterback Amier Bowen gave the Cougars faithful a taste of what’s to come last Friday.
He nearly engineered a comeback, but the Ranch came up short in a 48-42 loss to visiting Ceres. Bowen was spectacular in the season opener, completing 23 of 35 passes for 326 yards and three touchdowns. He completed tosses to seven different receivers.
Bowen was also a handful for the Ceres defense while on the run, as he rushed for 169 yards on 17 carries and scored twice more on the ground.
Led by senior running back Andrew Gibson, who scored four touchdowns including the first two of the game, Ceres jumped out to a 25-7 first-half lead. Bowen kept the Cougars within striking distance with a 10-yard strike to Desmond Ware with 12.2 seconds left.
The two teams traded TDs throughout the second half, and Bowen’s 15-yard touchdown pass to Fletcher Pitts capped the final score with 2:34 remaining. Bowen also competed three passes on conversion tries.
Weston Ranch will look to right the ship Friday at Edison.
