Manteca golfers split first 2 VOL contests

Manteca is 1-1 to start the Valley Oak League girls golf season.

The Buffaloes first dominated Lathrop 268-379 at Old River Golf Course in Tracy on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Kimball visited Manteca Park Golf Course and edged out the Buffs, 276-281.

Sophomore Bella Gonzales led the charge against Lathrop, earning medalist honors with a 9-over 45. All six Buffaloes came away with league points. Taylor Reed followed with a 51, Kylee Eberlee a 53, Alyssa Gutierrez a 54 and Ashley Pease and Meghan Garlets each shot a 65. Chloe Malicoat’s 71 paced the Spartans.

Kimball’s Kayla Naldo was the top finisher Wednesday with a 13-over 50. Reed finished two strokes shy of the leader for second place. Sophie Whaite added a 53 for Kimball.

 

TENNIS

Manteca 9, Central Valley 0

The Buffaloes bounced back from their season-opening loss at Modesto Metro Conference champion Gregori on Wednesday, earning sweeps at every spot in the ladder.

At the top, Julia Tang waxed Guadalupe Becerra, 6-1, 6-0. Koryn Menasco (6-1, 6-2), Taylor Corona (6-0, 6-0), Makenna Condit (6-1, 6-2), Sahiba Kaur (6-1, 6-0) and Stephanie Mercado (6-0, 6-0) also made quick work of their opponents.

The most competitive match came at No. 1 doubles, as Manteca’s Ravneet Dhillon and Navina Mann warded off Abby Martinez and Daniela Yepez, 6-3, 7-5. Julianne Eavenson and Kaileah Johannson won, 6-1, 6-1. Noeli Mercado and Melissa Poncini were leading the third doubles match 6-3, 5-0 before the Central Valley tandem retired.

Manteca is back in action today at home against Tracy starting at 3.

 

VOLLEYBALL

Sierra 3, Franklin 0

STOCKTON — The Timberwolves (3-0) improved to 3-0 after coasting past Franklin, 25-11, 25-18, 25-19. It’s their first 3-0 start since 2005, according to MaxPreps.

Lindsey Walljasper tagged 10 kills, and Emma Brierly contributed four to the attack.

 

Sophomore

Sierra 2, Franklin 0

Natalie Dias spearheaded Sierra’s 28-26, 25-12 sweep.

 

Freshman

Sierra 2, Franklin 0

Inessa Villanueva served up 25 points, as the Timberwolves rolled to a 25-13, 25-7 victory.

Allison Threet provided good passing and chipped in five service points.
