A handful of Lathrop streets could be closed temporarily next week to allow the City of Lathrop to return to a longer parade route.
If the Lathrop City Council decides on Monday, Dec. 4, to approve the resolution proposed by city staff, sections of Fifth Street, J Street, Thomsen Road and Cambridge Drive will be closed to motorists on Saturday. Dec. 9 shortly before the 11 a.m. parade begins.
According to the staff report prepared for the council, staff is proposing a return to the longer parade route that had been utilized in previous years, and have already cleared the temporary closures both the Public Works and Community Development Departments as well as Lathrop Police Services and the Lathrop-Manteca Fire District. Both emergency services will be involved in the parade – an out-of-service fire unit used to transport Santa Claus, and in-service fire vehicles located at the tail-end of the parade to allow to respond to calls as necessary – and will help ensure safety at the event.
Staging of the parade entries will be located on J Street between 6th Street and Revere Lane, as well as on Sixth Street between J and K Streets. The judges review stand will be located along J Street.
Two days before the event barricades that will limit access to those streets will be placed on the side of the road in preparation for the road closure and to alert the community about areas of no parking and street closure. On the day of the parade, additional barricades advertising “road closed ahead” and “detour ahead” will be placed before the hard closure to alert traffic, and 30 minutes prior to the start of the parade the roads will be closed for the duration of the event.
Volunteers from STARS – Sherriff’s Team of Active Retired Seniors – and volunteers with the Parks and Recreation Department staff will help at all intersections for traffic flow, and help pick up the barricades when the parade concludes.
Expenses associated with the road closure are expected to be offset by parade entry fees, and no other expenses are expected as a result.
The segments of roadway that will be closed include 5th Street from Thomsen Road to J Street, J Street from 5th Street to Cambridge, Cambridge from J Street to Thomsen Road, and Thomsen Road from Cambridge to 5th Street.
