A joint effort between Behind the Fire LMFD and the Lathrop Community Barbecue Committee is attempting to make the holidays a little bit more comfortable for a group of local seniors.
According to Shawn Wootten of the Lathrop-Manteca Firefighters Association, the union is currently soliciting donations for things like hats, scarves, gloves, coats, socks, blankets and other winter items to help outfit a number of women currently living at Lathrop senior care facility.
Wootten said that the effort is the passion project of Lathrop resident and Lathrop Community Barbecue Committee organizer Michele Anderson, who approached the department with the idea to gather some of the items so that they can be delivered on Dec. 22 in time for the Christmas holiday.
Other personal care items like lotion and lip balm are also being sought.
All donations can be brought by Fire Station 34 – located at 460 River Islands Parkway – between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday from now until Dec. 21.
“She (Anderson) approached us with the idea and we were immediately on board with helping any way that we could,” Wootten said of the item collection. “It’s a great event to help seniors right here in Lathrop during the holidays.”
The winter clothing item collection is the second Christmas-themed community service project that the Lathrop-Manteca Firefighters will be completing during the month of December. Just two days prior to the delivery of all of the items being collected for the seniors, Santa Claus will trade in his sleigh for an engine that will carry him around Lathrop to pre-selected families and deliver presents to children who might not otherwise have something under the tree.
Additional information about how to support the efforts can be obtained by visiting a fire station during business hours, or by calling 209.941.5100.
