LATHROP — Lathrop’s Kassandra Ceja and Cydney Garcia took turns assisting each other for two goals in the game’s first 90 seconds Thursday as part of a 10-minute, five-goal blitz on the way to an 11-0 win over Stagg of at Bennie Gatto Field in non-league girls soccer action.

“We have started clicking now,” Spartans coach Jose Montes said. “They are believing what we teach them. It would be nice to see this happen every game even though that’s not going to happen. But when it’s there, it’s there.”

Ceja had the hottest foot for Lathrop (2-0), putting four balls in the net and adding two assists.

“We have been working very hard on starting strong,” Ceja said. “The first five minutes of a game is key and everyone gave 100 percent at the beginning.”

Garcia had a hat trick herself with three goals and two assists, and she believes the key to success begins before the opening whistle.

“We pump ourselves up before the game,” Garcia said. “Having a good warmup is key for our momentum.”

Even the Lathrop goalie got into the scoring with a goal and an assist. Noelle Smith assisted Sierra Rose once and late in the game she booted a goal for the first of her career.

“This was a first for me,” Smith said. “They wanted it for me and I wanted it for me, but I didn’t know if I could do it. I think being a keeper and knowing keeper’s tendencies really helped me out because I knew exactly what she was going to do.

“Bonding off the field is a big thing for us and one thing I am very thankful for is that we are all friends on this team. Since we bond off the field we are good on the field.”

Kayla DeAnda and Emily Rubacalva each added a goal for the Spartans and Francessca Villanueva had an assist.

The Delta Queens fall to 0-7.
