LATHROP —Jose Montes isn’t concerned about his team’s record, but it just so happens to be a good one in the early going his third season as Lathrop girls soccer coach.
The Spartans are 3-0 for the first time in program history, and visiting West of Tracy made them work  for their 4-3 victory on Tuesday. Lathrop never trailed but traded goals with the Wolf Pack (2-4) until Kassandra Ceja buried the go-ahead score midway through the second half. Lizbeth Sanchez set up the deciding goal with a through-ball from midfield.
“I don’t care if we lose a preseason game,” Montes said. “I want to use it as a learning experience. I just want to make sure we’re prepared to play Sierra in our first (Valley Oak League) game next week. I think we’re going to surprise a lot of teams this year.”
Ceja, the reigning MVP of the VOL, finished with two goals and an assist. Cydney Garcia scored twice and assisted two goals while playing three different positions Tuesday.
“She’s my utility player,” Montes said of Garcia. “She played forward, outside mid and ended as a defender. She was the heart of the team today. I could tell she wanted it so bad.”
Noelle Smith racked up 17 saves at goal. Jessica McNair, who transferred to West from Lathrop, accounted for two of the Wolf Pack’s goals.
