ELK GROVE — Jorge Cedano spearheaded a balanced effort for the Manteca boys basketball team, which tallied its first win of the season Thursday with a 72-40 throttling of Foothill in the opening round of the Cosumnes Oaks Running with the Pack Tournament.

The junior guard fired 20 points, while Gino Campiotti added 14. Matthew Ender finished with eight points, as the trio played just its second game for the Buffaloes (1-4) following the end of football season.

Tyrel Morris also scored 20 for the Mustangs (1-9) from Sacramento.

“We came out a little lackadaisical,” Manteca coach Brett Lewis said. “A 4  o’clock game was a little different for us so we were flat and didn’t play with energy. We played really well after halftime. I’m proud of how the guys responded.”

Manteca built a 38-26 halftime lead but exploded from there, going on a 24-7 run in the third quarter to put it out of reach. Michael Ballard contributed nine points to the win. Jordan Burciaga and Josh Ruiz turned in seven apiece.

Manteca faces El Capitan (5-2) of Merced tonight at 7. Tourney host Cosumnes Oaks (3-2) takes on cross-town rival Elk Grove (3-2) in the other semifinal.

They held the Hawks to single-digit scoring in every quarter and jumped ahead 16-2 by the end of the first. Julia Vezaldenos was the only player to finish in double figures with 18 points. Hailey Gosney and Nina Murphy chimed in with seven apiece, as nine of the 13 Lancers who played scored.

“It was good for us to get a win,” East Union coach Jim Agostini said. “Any win is a good win for us after the tough losses that we’ve had, but those are OK. We can learn a lot from those and it’s valuable experience.”
