After a string of auto burglaries in the ACE Train parking lot over the last several weeks, Lathrop Police Services worked with Altamont Corridor Express security to establish a suspect.
And after staking out the parking lot and searching for him, they identified the man in what turned out to be a stolen vehicle. After a short pursuit – in which the pursuit had to be called off because of a broken police car – they were eventually able to locate him and take him into custody.
Daniel Herring, 24, was arrested on Friday, Dec. 15, on charges of auto theft, possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of stolen property, possession of a concealed dirk or dagger, possession of burglary tools, felony evading of a police officer and for being a felon in possession of both a firearm and ammunition.
Deputies discovered the dagger in his pants as he was taken into custody, and upon searching the residence where he was observed, found a loaded shotgun.
The pursuit was called off after what is being described as an “equipment failure” of one of the vehicles. Additional units were eventually able to recover the stolen car when he abandoned it and fled on foot before ultimately making it back to his residence.
Detectives from Lathrop Police Services are still working to identify other property that was in possession to determine if it was taken from previous auto burglaries at the Lathrop ACE Train station.
