Next week when the wrapping paper piles high and the boxes become too much to fit into your garbage can, don’t forget that refuse collection in Lathrop will be running a day behind.
Republic Services, the business that owns the contract for garbage collection in Lathrop, will be closed on Monday, Dec. 25, and Monday, Dec. 1, for the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, respectively – meaning that collection across the city will be delayed by a single day to accommodate.
The one-day delay will run through the last week of December and the first week of January, and then will return back to normal.
This means that for that two-week period, garbage collection that takes place on Fridays will be moved to Saturday in order to allow Republic to give their employees those holidays off.
For those who have opted for a Christmas tree inside of their home, Republic Services will begin picking them up curbside on Jan. 2 and will continue doing so through Jan. 12. All ornaments, nails, tinsel, lights and tree stands must be removed from the tree before it is picked up as all standard Christmas trees will be recycled.
Both flocked and fire-proofed trees will still be picked up, but will not be recycled because of the chemicals contained within the additives used.
Those that wish to break down their own Christmas trees or discard other brush or limbs from Jan. 2 through Jan. 17 are encouraged to partner with neighbors to create single piles, and use only string to tie together limbs to make pickup and recycling easier for crews. Limbs must not exceed four feet in length or four inches in diameter, and bundles and bags must not weigh more than 50 pounds. All leaves wishing to be picked up during that time frame must be bagged in order to be collected.
