Sixty years ago, on August 3, 1950, for the first time in its history, Manteca High School will have two full-time physical education instructors. Selected to be head of the P.E. department and also head baseball coach was Arte Fairbanks. Head football coach and assistant in the P.E. department will be John Fekete, a graduate of Ohio University in 1946.

In other sports stories from the Bulletin files:

100 years ago: July 29, 1910 - One of the latest and best things in Escalon this week is the organization of the Athletic Club with 45 members. The club has in view the erection of a large hall and gymnasium. There will be a dancing floor 80 feet long.

70 years ago: August 1, 1940 - Last Sunday, the Escalon and Manteca Merchants were to have played a regular Central League contest at Escalon. When the game time arrived, the Manteca club had gathered at Escalon in preparation for the tilt but the Escalon squad was not present. When game time had arrived, the Escalon club had gathered on the local high school diamond in anticipation of the game and Manteca did not show up. This talk might sound a little off-key, but the reason for this mixup was caused by the failure of the league secretary, Bob Grogan, to send Manager Harry Taylor the revised schedule of the second half. Grogan had sent it to Harold Garvine, manager of the local tossers, and the result was that both teams thought they were to play at each other’s diamond.

60 years ago: August 3, 1950 - Once again, the Manteca Merchants engaged in a slugfest with Solari’s Inn and once again came out on the short end, this time 15-10. John Jackovich led the Manteca hitting with three singles.

50 years ago: August 4, 1960 - The Manteca Merchants were eliminated from the Atwater Tournament last week as they dropped a 4-2 decision to the tough Fort Ord Warriors. Trailing 4-1 in the sixth frame, the locals threatened as Ray George tripled home Jerry McAdam with Manteca’s second run of the evening but pinch-hitter Darell Phillips grounded out to end the inning. Jerry Guibor pitched a five-hitter for Manteca.

40 years ago: July 31, 1970 - The Lions Club won the championship of the Manteca Babe Ruth League by defeating Lathrop in a playoff game.

30 years ago: July 29, 1980 -  Defending Formula Ford Challenge series champion Dave Knapp spun out with three laps to go at the International Raceway at Sears Point and lost the race last Sunday.

Manteca’s Gary Kron outdistanced 19 other entrants in the 10 year-old category of last Saturday’s District Pitch, Hit and Run competition staged at Turlock High. Kron, who won the local competition two weeks prior to Saturday’s District event, edged Robert Hosmer of Pittsburg by just six points, 302-296.

Mike Cimoli, an incoming senior at Manteca High, wound up finishing sixth in the shot put event at last weekend’s AAU national age group championships staged at Diablo Valley College. Cimoli, the Valley Oak League’s discus and shot put champion as a junior last year, heaved the shot 53-4 to place sixth in a field of 14.
