Sierra High had no sympathy for the relatively young Lathrop Spartan squad, rolling over the second-year varsity program with ease Thursday in a 15-0 victory.

Sierra No. 1 Vannida Nguyen was a perfect 3-0, winning 6-0, 6-1 and 6-0 in her action. No. 2 singles player Ann McFerran was brilliant as well going 6-0, 6-0 and 6-1 in her three wins. Natalie Ray’s three wins were as impressive, holding off Merchell Alegado 7-6 (7-4) in the closes of her three victories.

Doubles play was dominated by Stephanie Vanni and Maryann Baker who did not give up a point on the afternoon, posting a pair of 10-0 wins. No 2 doubles action was handled by Kelley Fuentes and Maddie Banks, who were 10-2 and 10-4 in their two wins.

“My team played really well today despite the heat,” Sierra head coach Marti Teunissen said. “Hopefully we can keep this momentum going throughout the rest of the season.”

Sierra will travel to Oakdale Tuesday to meet up with the Mustangs, while Lathrop travels to Manteca to battle the Buffaloes.

Kimball 8, Manteca 7
TRACY – First-year Valley Oak League program Kimball High was not the best hosts in its first match with Manteca, stopping the Buffaloes 8-7 in league action Thursday.

Manteca (0-2) got another impressive performance from No. 1 singles player Marlen Kurzhals, who was victorious in all her matches. Kurzhals rolled 6-3, 6-1 and 6-0 to pace the Buffaloes, but only found one other victory amongst her singles teammates.

Manteca’s No. 1 doubles team of Kaile Hunt and Adaeze Nkwocha beat the Kimball No. 2 10-4, but fell to the No. 1 squad 0-10. Kellie Lane and Valarie Monarrez won 10-o, but succumbed to the No. 1 0-10.

Manteca will play host to Lathrop Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
