It wasn’t the ideal way for Weston Ranch High to cap what has been an otherwise successful non-league schedule, but all things considered Coach Carlos Gaspar is still going into conference play beaming.

With three starters out, the host Cougars still managed to take a sizable lead over Edison of Stockton before settling for a 2-2 draw Tuesday.

Elias Venegas scored twice, both off feeds from Francisco Portillo, to put Weston Ranch (3-1-2) ahead, 2-0. Edison fired back eventually scored the tying goal with a penalty kick in the second half

Weston Ranch defeated two-time defending Tri-City Athletic League champion Stagg to start the season, and Edison was the runner-up in the TCAL in 2009.

Following its second-place finish in the Buffalo Cup at Manteca High Saturday, Gaspar went into Tuesday’s match with next week’s VOL opener in mind. The Cougars kick off the league season with Sonora at home Monday.

“I played a lot of substitutes here and there to keep my squad fresh for the (VOL) season opener, and I thought we still did really well,” Gaspar said. “It was a chance to give some of my starters more rest. We have three more days left of practice before league.”

Linden 1, Ripon 0
At Mistlin Sports Complex, Ripon (2-4-1) suffered its fourth consecutive defeat after finishing the Buffalo Cup winless last week.

Linden struck midway through the first half and held on in what was a lackluster offensive effort for both sides. Ripon goalkeeper came up with four saves.

“We made one mistake in the back and they scored off it,” Ripon coach Jamie DeBruyn said. “They didn’t create too many opportunities, but neither did we.

“We had a pretty disappointing weekend and I think we put that behind us. We have to figure out who can score consistently for us.”

Ripon will have a rematch with Patterson on the road Thursday. Patterson edged Ripon 3-2 in the consolation semifinals of the Buffalo Cup Saturday.
