The strong winds led to some high scores during a Valley Oak League match Tuesday at Manteca Park Golf Course, but it didn’t affect Oakdale High’s Jaylene Ponce.

Ponce was 2-over going into the sixth hole and coasted to a medalist finish of 42 on the par-37 front nine. The visiting Mustangs won 297-373 to improve to 3-0. Sierra fell to 1-2.

Allison Smith once again led Sierra’s young squad with a 55, finishing in a two-way tie for third with Oakdale’s Jule Bolme. Oakdale’s No. 6 golfer, Valerie Zemlyanskaya was the runner-up with a 52.

Also scoring for Sierra were Kiana Nelson (81), Elia Vasquez (79), Holly Cook (77) and Melanie Kiesel (81). Rounding out the score for Oakdale were Nikki Stastny (65) and Michelle Deroschers (81).

Sierra looks to even its record back up Thursday when it heads to Van Buskirk Golf Course in Stockton to face Weston Ranch.

Valley Foothill League
Escalon 151, Ripon 177
At Escalon Golf Course Tuesday, upstart Ripon got its first big test in the form of defending VFL and Sac-Joaquin Section Division V champion Escalon.

Senior Sam Conway paced the Indians with a 6-over-par 37 but was outdone by Escalon’s Pressley Pilati, who carded 34.

It wasn’t just Pilati doing the damage for the Cougars, however. Nicky Honen and Kasey John each shot a 38 from the second group, while Sabrina Luque turned in a 41.

“All their girls can shoot in the mid-30s on that course,” Ripon coach Eric Dambrosio said. “Escalon is so deep and is a tough team to beat.”

Haylee Fannin joined the sub-40 club with a 39 for Ripon. Freshman Sienna Starck contributed a 50, and Destiny Franco shot a 51.

Ripon next hosts Linden Thursday at Jack Tone Golf Course.
