East Union High delves into Valley Oak League action riding a three-match winning streak following Thursday’s sweep (25-19, 25-18, 25-13) of host Downey Thursday in Modesto.

The Lancers opened the season with back-to-back losses to small-school power Turlock Christian and Livingston before winning out its non-league schedule with successive three-game wins over Division-I programs.

“The girls came out on fire and were determined to be above .500 for the preseason,” EU coach Eryn Bowers said. “We are ready to go into league and make some noise.”

Brittany LaMar was in full control in the middle, coming through with eight kills and five blocks to go with four digs. Veve Rodriguez added eight of her own kills and two blocks.

Morgan Hulsebosch finished with six digs, two aces and two kills. Setters Taylor Maruca and Carmen Haro dished out 14 and nine assists, respectively.

East Union looks to keep the streak going against crosstown foe Manteca in the conference opener Sept. 16 at Dalben Center.

Manteca 3, Stagg 0
The Buffaloes (1-3) claimed their first victory of the season with little resistance (25-11, 25-16, 25-15).

Jimi Guibor led the attack with four kills, and middle blocker Dallas Mould added three. Tara Dadasovich recorded four aces, Abigail Rosas two digs and Jessica Reeder six assists.

Manteca has one more test against Ceres on the road Tuesday before heading to East Union for its first VOL contest.

“We just have to keep getting better,” Manteca coach Tim Horning said. “We could have allowed less points tonight but our passing was mediocre after our first game. We’re looking to be more consistent.”

Lathrop 3, Gustine 0
The host Spartans hit on all cylinders in their 25-20, 25-19, 25-16 win against Gustine Thursday.

Krystal Ruiz pounded out seven kills, with Janel Butler contributing 15 assists. Erica Sanchez helped keep the Gustine defense off balanced with several kills from the back row.

Blessie Caro, Britney Rallios and Grahzel Estrada played well in the back row.
