WESTON RANCH — The Cougars (2-1) finally put together a solid overall effort at Podesto Field.

“Our offense looked great,” sophomore head coach Seth Davis said.
Weston Ranch jumped out to a 13-0 first-half lead, with Joseph Gonzalez scoring on a 3-yard run.

Quarterback Joe Tillman connected with Mike Perez on a 60-yard pass play.

The Cougars will continue to iron out some kinks in preparation for their Valley Oak League opener against visiting Sonora.

“We still have some work to do,” added Davis, pointing the need to improve on coverage with special teams.

CERES – East Union recovered a fumble early deep in Ceres territory but could not convert the opportunity and never threatened again in a 24-0 non-league freshman football loss at Ceres High.

The Bulldogs used a pounding ground game up the middle to score a touchdown in the second, third and fourth quarters. Victor Lopez led the Lancers with 34 yards on seven carries.

“We dropped everything thrown our way,” East Union coach Ron Clayton said. “Our receivers have to catch the ball.  We will work this week to find athletes that want the ball.”

The Cougars freshmen weren’t able to get anything going against the San Joaquin Athletic Association’s Chavez High, getting handled 58-6 by the Titans.

The Cougars were able to get on the scoreboard midway through the second quarter, but they would not return to pay-dirt the remainder of the contest.

Weston Ranch will open the Valley Oak League season with a trip to Sonora on Thursday.
