The Manteca High cross-country team made a trip to the coast for the 39th Annual Half Moon Bay Artichoke Cross Country Invitational Saturday, competing against several programs at Half Moon Bay High.

“No. 1, we like going there because it’s competitive,” Manteca head coach Dave Fontanilla said. “It is always a good race. Paul Farnsworth, the coach at Half Moon Bay High, does a great job and he always brings the top teams in there.

“We know if we can compete, then we can do a good job in the VOL (Valley Oak League).”

Manteca got is best race from Tim Baker who closed the 2.3-mile course in 13:09, while teammate Hoan Bien finished in 13:53. Anthony Nguyen’s time was 14:25, while Trevor Gardner (14:27) and Kevin Craigwell (15:44) rounded out the Buffaloe finishers.

The Manteca varsity girls were led by Briana Lucas’ time of 17:58, ahead of teammate Breanna Rodriguez who finished the course in 19:21. Isaiah Cruz, Ben Tolman, Mario Gaytan and Elijah Carter all competed in the challenging frosh-soph field.

The group was able to enjoy the beautiful coastline and build some bonding time for the team with a positive lunch in the afternoon for the squad.

“This year we went to Santa Cruz and the kids and let the kids wander around a little bit,” Fontanilla said. “The weather was beautiful and they really got to a chance to see what it’s like in that part of the world.

“They definitely bonded as a group.”
