Co-head coach Brian Goulart was anxious to see how his East Union High girls golf team would perform in Wednesday’s Sierra Invitational — the Lancers’ first and last 18-hole event of the season before the Valley Oak League Championships.

“This was going to be a real gauge for us,” he said.
The Lancers put their coaches’ minds and rest by winning the tournament title for the fourth straight season at Manteca Park Golf Course.

East Union, 8-0 in VOL dual matches this year, has proven once again to be a force despite graduation losses over the years. The team aims to repeat as VOL and Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV champions for the fourth and fifth straight years, respectively.

East Union outscored runner-up Oak Ridge 453-476, with Tracy placing third (488) in the 16-team field.

“We’re just thrilled,” Goulart said. “We had no idea what we’re like for 18 holes because we haven’t played 18 holes all year.

“We’re looking forward to VOLs and ultimately the section tournaments, and the Sierra Invitational is always a good test for us. We’ve had some tough teams from Division I to the smaller schools come out, and once again the girls answered the call.”

Three Lancers, led by second-place Frances Telles’ nine-over-par 81, finished in the top eight for all-tournament honors. Jenny Ketner came through with a fifth-place finish round of 85, while Jillian Goulart took seventh with an 88.

Also scoring for East Union were sophomore Angelique Cardoza (99) and Salina Tiscareno (100).

Enochs standout Shawnee Martinez won the individual championship with a 75. Oak Ridge had two players make the all-tournament team: Lauren Swan (82) and Victoria Han (86).

Tournament host Sierra (617) finished one spot ahead of Manteca (647) for 13th place.

Contributing to Sierra’s score were: Allison Smith (111), Jessica Lewis (117), Elia Vasquez (125), Melanie Kiesel (131) and Holly Cook (133). Mickey Dias led Manteca with a 113, with Airenne Curry (122), Brooke Mejorado (129), Emily Owsley (141) and Kaylie Grimes (142) making up the rest of the team’s score.
